Divine Mercy in the Omer

How beautiful is the gift of divine mercy falling in the weeks between Passover and Pentecost?

The Lord already has given us so many gifts in the gift of his dying and resurrection and the fulfillment of the scriptures, yet here he is once more, pouring forth his goodness in divine revelation! And it’s not just in any season that he pours forth his wisdom, but a divinely appointed season, which was created from the beginning.

What is Divine Mercy? The Gift of God’s total love.

It wasn’t enough just to baptize his children in water, they would need to be baptized by his blood, in order to receive the fullness of his mercy and the grace to overcome.

WHAT is the Victory THAT OVERCOMES THE WORLD?

For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that overcomes the world, our faith. 1 John 5:4

WHO is it that OVERCOMES?

Who is it that overcomes the world but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? 1 John 5:5

WHO is Divine Mercy?

This is he who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood. 1 John 5:6

How fitting it is that such a divine reflection is given us to ponder in this same season God’s chosen ones are called to reflect on the goodness of His nature in a more intimate way. When we Count the Omer in our hearts we see the gift of Christ’s offering as not merely expiation to the Law for our sins but as an invitation to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. When we eat of the bread of Life, we grow off the nutrients of good food. Man cannot live off bread alone. Nor can water sustain him for eternity. The source of all life is in the blood. For us to live as a new creation in Christ, we would need both water and blood.

It is not enough to live off the living water of God’s word alone, in baptism and the Law; we must come to the acceptance of his life source, in the Omer, the bread that gives us energy to grow in grace, the blood that gives us his power to demonstrate his divine mercy and love. By the water, we belong to God under the Law, but by Christ’s blood, we become God’s children under the power of the Holy Spirit.

The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” Romans 8:15

It is truly God’s Divine Mercy that we have been made his sons and daughters and given the gift of the Bread of Life to take and eat to live eternally with Him. The saying, “What you eat, you become,” is very apropos. When we choose to continue to eat from the Tree of Life, we become it. When we take and eat of the water and the blood of Christ, we receive his divine mercy to both fulfill the law and demonstrate God’s mercy and love in power to others.

“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be in usfulfilled, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.” Romans 8:1-6

Without the power of the blood to renew our mind, we would be unable to fulfill the righteous requirement of the law. Death and sin would still prevail. But we have been given true food to take and eat, the first fruit of the grain offering, the Omer, that we might be transformed by the renewing of our mind, which is the exchanging of our blood for the blood of Christ, that we may no longer eat of death, deception and despair but know what is life and Truth and discern the will of God for ourselves.

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2

Whether you choose to partake in the counting of the Omer or want to just sit and reflect on the gift of Divine Mercy, I encourage you to spend time pondering what it means to be transformed into the likeness of someone else. How much time would you need to be near them to study them? To learn their mannerisms? Their way of speech? How much of your self would you need to purge to make room for these new ways, these new words, these new patterns of thought? How willing are you to trust them with your soul? Do you believe that you can become like Christ? Do you believe him when He says you can overcome the world just by your belief in him? Are you willing to take and eat of the Life Source he offers you each day, to start anew and begin again until that transformation is complete?

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness (Lamentations 3:22-23).

In giving of himself totally, in water and blood, Christ commits to us his totality of faithfulness. The question is then asked of us, “Do you Trust Him?”

Tell [all people], My daughter, that I am Love and Mercy itself. When a soul approaches Me with trust, I fill it with such an abundance of graces that it cannot contain them within itself, but radiates them to other souls. Souls who spread the honor of My mercy I shield through their entire lives as a tender mother her infant, and at the hour of death I will not be a Judge for them, but the merciful Savior. At that last hour, a soul has nothing with which to defend itself except My mercy. Happy is the soul that during its lifetime immersed itself in the Fountain of Mercy, because justice will have no hold on it. Write this: Everything that exists is enclosed in the bowels of My mercy, more deeply than an infant in its mother’s womb. How painfully distrust of My goodness wounds Me! Sins of distrust wound Me most painfully. (1073 – 1076 Diary of Faustina)
