Wormwood Wine Mix DIY | St. Hildegard von Bingen

This wine recipe from St. Hildegard’s Physica is one of her favorites and is a staple for her Spring Fast.

Wormwood is the signature member of the Artemisia family. Saint Hildegard recommends this herb, infused in wine, frequently. The old German name for wormwood infused wine is the origin of the herbed wine we now know as vermouth. This popular addition to a martini was once a very popular medicine and tonic made by the Benedictines. She recommends applying this wine to the head for headaches, dropped into the ears to rid them of vermin, for toothache, pain in the chest (also applied as an infused ointment – see our Wormwood Ointment in our Healing Hildegard section), for melancholy, sickness in the loins, clear eyesight, to strengthen the heart, prevent the lungs from becoming sick, warm the stomach, purge the intestines and ensure good digestion! She writes of her Spring Fasting recommendation, “Drink this (wine) every other day before breakfast, from May to October.”*

We prepare this wine mix for you just like we do at home, and as St. Hildegard did at her Abby during the Fasting season, with much prayer and reflection for the gifts of the Holy Spirit! Saint Hildegard von Bingen is A Saint for Our Times. May you have a joyful fast in her same spirit!

Pair it with a bottle of your favorite wine and a bottle of honey and it makes the perfect for your favorite health nut.

THIS MIX INCLUDES:
• fresh organic dried wormwood
• muslin cloth tea bag for easy straining of herbs
• wooden honey spoon for adding honey. Hildegard recommends using wooden over metal utensils when working with honey and herbs.
