The official list of canonized saints with significant ties to the United States includes 11 Catholic saints recognized for their life, ministry, or birthplace on American soil.
The canonized American saints include:
St. Elizabeth Ann Seton (1774–1821): The first native-born US citizen canonized. Born in New York City, she converted to Catholicism and founded the Sisters of Charity of St. Joseph’s, pioneering the U.S. Catholic parochial school system.
St. John Neumann (1811–1860): The first male US citizen and the first American bishop to be canonized. Born in Bohemia, he served as the fourth Bishop of Philadelphia and founded the first diocesan Catholic school system.
St. Kateri Tekakwitha (1656–1680): The first Native American saint, often called the “Lily of the Mohawks.” Raised in present-day New York, she converted to Catholicism and lived a life of consecrated virginity.
St. Katharine Drexel (1858–1955): A Philadelphia heiress who dedicated her vast wealth and life to serving Native Americans and African Americans. She founded the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament and Xavier University in New Orleans.
St. Frances Xavier Cabrini (1850–1917): The first US citizen to be canonized. Known as “Mother Cabrini,” she was born in Italy and founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, establishing numerous schools, hospitals, and orphanages across America.
St. Rose Philippine Duchesne (1769–1852): A French-born religious sister who traveled to the United States in 1818 to minister to Native Americans and frontier children. She opened the first free school for girls west of the Mississippi.
St. Théodore Guérin (1798–1856): A French-born nun who journeyed to Indiana, where she established schools, orphanages, and the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods.
St. Junípero Serra (1713–1784): A Spanish Franciscan missionary who established nine of the 21 Spanish missions in Alta California, promoting the spread of Christianity throughout the American West.
St. Damien de Veuster (1840–1889): Known as “Father Damien of Molokai,” this Belgian priest ministered to leprosy patients in the Hawaiian islands.
St. Marianne Cope (1838–1918): A German-born nun who left New York for Hawaii, dedicating her life to caring for leprosy patients at the Kalaupapa colony.
St. Isaac Jogues (1607–1646): A French Jesuit missionary who ministered to Native American tribes in upstate New York. He was martyred by the Mohawks and is one of the North American Martyrs.
