Benches or Trenches

Where have you felt the presence of God?

An old cathedral? In nature? Listening to a beautiful choir? In the silence of the stars?

‬‬“Is there anyplace I can go to avoid your Spirit? to be out of your sight? If I climb to the sky, you’re there! If I go underground, you’re there! If I flew on morning’s wings to the far western horizon, You’d find me in a minute— you’re already there waiting! Then I said to myself, “Oh, he even sees me in the dark! At night I’m immersed in the light!” It’s a fact: darkness isn’t dark to you; night and day, darkness and light, they’re all the same to you.”

‭‭Psalm‬ ‭139:7-12‬ ‭MSG‬‬

How overwhelming it is to know that God’s presence is not bound by space, time, or laws. He is everywhere and waiting for us!

The very first church experienced his presence in such an outlandish and incredible way. It is truly hard for me to comprehend. Deep and burning passion was deposited into each one of them. They were deemed with purpose and pursuit.

I have experienced God’s presence in a church building, in my bedroom, on a beach in India, in a bar, holding my children.

I heard it said this past weekend that we can only truly give glory to God once we know who we are in the his presence. Once we know who we are in his presence, we can truly know him.

So where is God? Is He on the church benches or is he in the trenches? Is he on the mountain top or is he in the valley? Is he in sunlit sky or is he in the dark of night? And the answer is yes. He is there. So go there, be in his presence, and let his glory fill the earth.
