How Beautiful Are Your Ways, Oh God!

How great are your works, O LORD! Your thoughts are very deep!
 – Psalm 92:5

How many are your works, LORD! In wisdom you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.
 – Psalm 104:24

How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them!
 – Psalm 139:17

Many, LORD my God, are the wonders you have done, the things you planned for us. None can compare with you; were I to speak and tell of your deeds, they would be too many to declare.
 -Psalm 40:5

Our souls were meant to proclaim the goodness of God.

This morning, I sat in quiet contemplation, that is, I sought the Lord in between the noisy footsteps of my two young children walking about the inside of the house like a herd of elephants. Amidst the seemingly well-timed interruptions of “Mom!” I began to wonder if I would ever break into the sound of Heaven. Do you have mornings like this? Wanting desperately to seek the peace of God only to be met with constant interruption?

Just when my heart was about to faint and the cacophony of today’s To-Do List was about to pour in above me, flooding out all connection, I saw the heaven’s open. And just like that, in an instant, I could hear the Lord calling. So it is with all of us who seek Him, at least it ought to be.

Probably the most valuable gift we could ever receive from the Lord, next to His grace for salvation and conversion, is the gift of discernment. Learning to discern the voice of God in your life is your only hope against the darkness.

And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left. –Isaiah 30:21

Without the gift of discerning spirits, we are at odds with the noise of this world, wandering about in darkness, turning about to and fro with every wind that moves about us.

It’s not just enough that we hear a voice, dear ones, we must discern if it is the Lord’s.

Would you know, this day, if Jesus were calling you? Can you hear His voice amidst the noise? Have you disciplined your ears to find His whisper? Would you test Him to know it is Him who speaks?

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. –1 John 4:1-21

As the Psalms above declare to us, the Lord is rich in mercy and His thoughts are vast and deep. Because of what Jesus did for us, we can know the Father’s Heart, by the power of the Holy Spirit. We can hear His voice. We can discern the will of the Father for our lives. We do not need to wander about in darkness, not knowing what the day will bring.

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you. Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding, which must be curbed with bit and bridle, or it will not stay near you. –Psalm 32:8-9

But first, we must hearken to His voice. We must seek it daily, hourly, minute by minute, unceasingly.

Come to know the heart of God for you, dear one, and you will unlock a vast treasure of riches you’ve never known. Your life will take on new meaning and you will discover there’s a whole other world waiting for you to see and engage with.

We can always grow in discernment. This is one gift that never ends. Buy a book, watch a youtube teaching on discerning spirits, go to an event like ours in your neighborhood, read what the Bible says about testing the voice of God and learn how to use this valuable gift to its fullest!

It is only in the context of full surrender to God’s plan for our life that we can begin to understand the beauty of what the Psalms above reveal to us. We must be willing to press through the interruptions to receive the beauty.

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” –Psalm 119:105
